Fernando Pessoa and his Heteronyms: Alberto Caeiro

Fernando Pessoa and his Heteronyms: Alberto Caeiro

Fernando Pessoa is a melancholic Portuguese poet and writer who created heteronyms (alter egos with different personalities and writing styles) to express his thoughts  in his writing. Fernando Pessoa created a total of 80 heteronyms but the three who have the most extensive body of work and that are most fleshed out are Albert Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Alvaro De Campos. I am currently reading "A Little Larger than the Entire Universe" which is a collection of Pessoa's poetry. I want to share some of his work with the world so I will be highlighting his poetry as well as the poetry of the three heteronyms mentioned above.  This is an appreciation post- I want to appreciate Pessoa and I want to share writing that has helped me cope through these difficult times. His poetry is peace for me.

Alberto Caeiro's Beautiful Lines

Today we start with Alberto Caeiro a self proclaimed "naturalist" he stated "I'm not a materialist or a deist or anything else. I am a man who one day opened the window and discovered this crucial thing: Nature exists". Here are some of his beautiful lines.

"The world wasn't made for us to think about it
(To think is to have eyes that aren't well)
But to look at it and to be in agreement"

"I have no philosophy I have senses...
If I speak of Nature its not because I know what it is
But because I love it, and for that very reason,
Because those who love never know what they love
or why they love or what love is"

"Love is innocence
and the sum of not thinking is innocence"

"And enjoying our shared secret
Of Knowing that in all the world
There is no mystery
And that everything is worthwhile"

"Lightly, lightly, very lightly
A very light wind passes
And it goes away just as lightly
And I don't know what I'm thinking
Nor do I wish to know"

"I look and I am moved,
I am moved the way water flows when the ground slopes
And my poetry is natural like the stirring of the wind..."

"All it takes to be complete is to exist"
