The Poet X Chronicles 3
The Poet X Chronicles 3
One of my favorite books from last year is Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. One of the things I loved the most about the book was how the main character loves writing and the way that writing helps her cope with the challenges she's facing in her life. We see this through different writing prompts that Xiomara gets assigned in English class. I am going to be answering these writing prompts through a series of blog posts.
3rd Prompt: When was the last time you felt free?
The last time I felt free was when I visited Portugal in October. In particular the days I spent in Lisbon. The moment I arrived in Portugal I knew I was free. Because I had a dream to go there and I found myself stepping in that soil, of smelling that sweet air and taking in the orange rays of dawn. Freedom is the pursuit of your hearts desire, freedom is seeing your dreams become a reality.
Freedom is the ability to do whatever you want whenever you want without concern or care for others opinions or objections.I would wake up every morning without pressure of someone else's agenda without any sense of time at all. American life is so structured but being a teacher requires such a level of structure that it's exhausting. The moment classes start I am on a schedule that's structured down to the minute. Being so schedule doesn't allow you to live on a whim and y nature I'm spontaneous so there's always this feeling like I'm holding back my true nature for the sake of this life. It's exhausting being in a constant run against time as well. It seem's there's never enough time no matter how hard you work.
On this trip I had the financial comfort to be spontaneous and try anything I wanted. I ate pastel de nata every day, and drank new things like vinho verde or ginga in a white chocolate cup. I ate familiar things too like a simple bowl of spaghetti with tomato sauce and parmesan cheese every evening accompanied by a glass of red wine. I went on day trips around Lisbon visiting new neighborhoods like Belem and cascais beach. Sometimes I would be on a tour bus and pass by something interesting and get off and explore and return to the bus when I wanted. There were times I was tired from it all and I just rested and I felt free in the ability to do that. All this freedom was inspiring I wrote and wrote so much, I took pictures trying desperately to capture every moment of beauty, and I talked to people and shared stories.
Wherever what your heart desires is that's where you'll find freedom so seek it out every chance you get because there's not a more delicious fruit.
