Every Brilliant Thing
Every Brilliant Thing
The Indianapolis Repertoire Theater is currently playing "Every Brilliant Thing" by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe. I went to see it with my sister as a birthday outing and I was blown away with how wonderfully it was written and acted. It's the story of a man whose mother is suffering from depression and keeps trying to kill herself. It's about how he copes and is impacted by her actions. As a child he decides to write a list of "Brilliant things" reasons to live in hopes he can cheer his mom on but it comes his own list of reasons to live for himself.
One of my take aways is that there is beauty all around us in small and big things and that we should always be actively looking for these "brilliant things" that are all around us. Obviously the topic of depression and suicide is heavy here. It made me reflect on the people around me and how I need to be more intentional about staying connected and providing patient and honest love. I am no stranger to depression and I've struggled with loneliness and begin able to maintain relationships because I often don't feel like going out and all that. My optimism and willingness to invest in things I love to do and that make me happy really helps. This play has inspired me to start my own list of brilliant things! A list of 20 is below.
Add to my list! What are the brilliant things all around you?
My Brilliant things:
Walking outside an airport in a new country for the first time
The old book smell
When you're in the beach and it rains
Sunsets
Sunrises
Warm showers on cold days
Chopping vegetables neatly and consecutively
Strawberry and yogurt parfaits
Bubblegum (candycotton for americans) flavored icecream
Sand in between your toes
Salty smell of the ocean
Checking off completed to dos on checklists
The color red
When my dog keeps tapping me to rub his belly
When my dog licks my cheek
The smell of fresh baked pastries coming out the oven
The song Waves by Mr Probs (Robin Schullz remix)
Journaling
Cooking new recipes and getting them right the first time
A glass of cold water on a summer day
Landing at the Puerto Plata airport
